What Cost, Global Freelancer?

Go9Media co-founder Dave Hime was perusing The New York Times this week when he came across an article about outsourcing in this global economy. In it the author states that companies using freelance programmers overseas can reap significant cost savings because their hourly rates are so much lower than those of programmers in the United States.

The author cites the Curious Chef Web site as an example. Tailor Made Products chief executive John Wilde paid $20,000 to an Indian firm to build Curious Chef — a figure he estimates to be about half what it would’ve cost him in the U.S.

In contrast, Austin’s own Go9Media recently designed and built these beautiful, functional Web sites: AGM, VRBO’s Tech Geek and Blue Note Bakery. Dave notes the cost for each was even less than that of the Curious Chef site; no long distance phone calls required.

So Go9Media staff believes the moral of this short story is that U.S. companies large and small can still support local businesses and our country’s economic recovery in a way that makes sense for them financially. Think globally, buy locally.
