Who you callin’ Geek?
Once a term relegated to the socially awkward, being called a “geek†is a high compliment these days. Today’s whiz kids are revered for their unique skills, and they wield ever-increasing consumer buying power.
Businesses are taking note and catering to the technorati with programs and services especially for them. Go9Media client, Vacation Rentals By Owner (VRBO), is no exception. This month, VRBO rolled out TechGeek — a travel site specifically for technical convention attendees. Designed by Creative Suitcase and Dena Taylor, this site helps visitors select their level of geekness, then search for conferences and VRBO accommodations in those areas.
This site’s functionality is way cool — and very complicated. Fortunately, Go9Media’s own geek, Andy, was equal to the task.
In addition to coordinating JavaScript pop-up placement, rollovers and image maps, he developed the site using an intricate web of cascading style sheets (nine, in fact) to control the many different functions.
One of the biggest issues was browser considerations. Creating a complex site that displayed and worked correctly in all the major browsers was a tall order. But that’s what made it so much fun, and ultimately so gratifying for our own tech geek.
“My favorite thing about this project was the challenge; that all the elements that had to work together,†Andy says. “Seeing the end result was worth the hours of coding.â€
We think so, too. You can check out the fruits of his labor at the VRBO TechGeek Con site: http://traveler.vrbo.com/geekcons.
